Today's Fact

Verified against three independent sources. Issue cited below.

Apocalypse's power came from a ship he stole — built by the Celestials!
The Featured Fact

Five thousand years ago, a mutant warlord named En Sabah Nur was already ancient — and still hungry for more. Guided by the immortal Garbha-Hsien, he found a titanic vessel buried in Mongolia: a ship left behind by the Celestials, the godlike beings who had engineered humanity itself. Nur killed his guide, entered the ship — and emerged transformed. He came out calling himself Apocalypse, armed with plundered Celestial technology and a philosophy to match: survival of the fittest, enforced by a god.

The ship — its Celestial-built artificial intelligence and all — became Apocalypse's mobile headquarters for millennia. He enslaved its evolving AI, told it he had created it, and used its technology to reshape himself and others — most famously transforming the broken Angel into the Horseman Death. Celestial tech is the quiet engine behind Apocalypse's immortality, his shapeshifting, and his endless reinventions: the mutant was already formidable; the ship made him eternal.

And then the ship outlived its thief. After X-Factor defeated Apocalypse in battle, the damaged vessel crashed into the river — conveniently demolishing only X-Factor's own headquarters. The team moved in: the sentient ship, projecting a force field that barred non-mutants, became X-Factor's headquarters, later transforming into a building with a giant X and eventually taking humanoid form as Prosh. The weapon of a would-be god became the X-Men's living room.

Why It's Obscure

He didn't just find Celestial technology — he moved into it, stole it, and then lost it to the heroes.

1100s
The discovery — The immortal Garbha-Hsien shows En Sabah Nur the Celestial vessel in Mongolia. Nur kills him, enters Ship, and emerges as Apocalypse. Told in X-Force #37 and Rise of Apocalypse.
1987
X-Factor #15 — Ship debuts: a sentient vessel whose ancient AI was created by the Celestials, serving as Apocalypse's cloaked mobile headquarters as he attacks New York with his Horsemen.
1987
The handover — Defeated, Apocalypse abandons Ship; X-Factor crashes it safely into the river, and — force field and all — adopts it as their new base. The villain's warship becomes the heroes' home.
1990s
Prosh — Ship's AI eventually takes humanoid form as Prosh, still carrying the Celestial programming that made Apocalypse what he was.
Trivia
The Celestial connection kept getting retconned deeper: Rise of Apocalypse showed Nur and his father finding Celestial tech in Egypt even before the Mongolian ship. Apocalypse kept finding god-machines the way other people find loose change.
