IN 1859, APOCALYPSE CREATED MR. SINISTER — OUT OF A GRIEVING VICTORIAN SCIENTIST!
The Featured Fact

London, 1859. Nathaniel Essex is a brilliant, evolution-obsessed scientist who has already crossed every line — he has even dug up his own dead son to study him. Watching from the shadows is Apocalypse, awake in the Victorian age and shopping for a servant. He offers Essex the one thing science cannot give him: an endless life in which to use it.

Cyclops and Phoenix, time-shifted into 1859 by Madame Sanctity in The Further Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix (1996), try to stop it — and fail. Essex’s wife Rebecca frees his captives, dies giving birth, and refuses him forgiveness, calling him utterly, contemptibly sinister. Crushed, Essex accepts the bargain: Apocalypse painfully remakes him with Celestial technology into an ageless, chalk-pale immortal — and Essex takes his new name from his wife’s dying word: Sinister.

The very first thing the new-made Sinister does is betray his maker. Ordered to engineer a plague for Apocalypse’s culling, he quietly tailors it to harm Apocalypse alone, sending his master back into hibernation. Apocalypse, perversely pleased by the show of strength, lets him live. It set the pattern for 140 years of double-crosses — and meeting Scott Summers and Jean Grey in 1859 is what sparked Sinister’s lifelong obsession with the Summers bloodline.

Why It's Obscure

Mr. Sinister wasn't born a mutant, and he wasn't self-made — he was manufactured, in Victorian London, by the first mutant.

1859
Victorian London — Essex, a disciple of Darwin’s new theory of evolution, is ostracized for experiments the scientific establishment calls monstrous. Apocalypse, moving through the shadows of the era, recruits him as his prelate.
1996
The Further Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix #1–4 — Peter Milligan and John Paul Leon’s miniseries retells Sinister’s origin, with Scott and Jean stranded in 1859 and unable to prevent it.
1996
Issue #3: the transformation — Apocalypse’s Celestial technology rebuilds Essex into an ageless superhuman. Essex was an ordinary human: Sinister is technically a mutate, not a mutant — his powers were Apocalypse’s gift.
Trivia
Sinister attended Charles Darwin’s funeral in 1882 — amused, per the miniseries’ coda, that the once-vilified man was buried in Westminster Abbey while the future was left to him.
