The first X-Man to quit the team did it to take up professional wrestling. In X-Men #8 (November 1964), by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Hank McCoy and Bobby Drake are in Greenwich Village when a child gets trapped atop a building. Hank climbs up and saves the boy in plain sight — and the crowd's gratitude curdles instantly into an anti-mutant mob that attacks them both for the crime of a mutant hiding among them.
Hank's fury is the point of the issue: he has had enough of defending a humanity that fears and hates him, and he quits the X-Men on the spot. Cyclops has to telepathically consult Professor Xavier — away hunting Lucifer — who can only say there is nothing to be done. A week later, Hank has reinvented himself: a professional wrestler, billed simply as the Beast.
His first big opponent is the problem: Unus the Untouchable, a mutant whose force field repels everything — a cheat code in a wrestling ring, where Hank's every charge bounces off “like a ping pong ball.” Unus is being courted by Mastermind for Magneto's Brotherhood, and must defeat an X-Man to join. Hank loses the match by count-out — then out-thinks everyone: he builds a power-amplifier beam and supercharges Unus's field until Unus cannot turn it off and cannot even feed himself. Unus renounces the Brotherhood in exchange for having the effect reversed, and the wrestler comes home to the X-Men.
Why It's Obscure
Rescue a child, get attacked by the crowd, quit the team, turn pro wrestler, lose to a man nobody can touch — then beat him with physics. All in Hank McCoy's eighth-ever appearance.
