Today's Fact

Verified against three independent sources. Issues cited below.

AN EVIL BEAST FROM ANOTHER TIMELINE BRICKED HANK INSIDE A WALL — AND TOOK HIS JOB!
The Featured Fact

For weeks in 1996, the Beast on the X-Men was not Hank McCoy. He was the Dark Beast — Hank’s counterpart from the Age of Apocalypse timeline, a cheerful torturer who had served that world’s Apocalypse. He slipped into Earth-616 through the M’Kraan Crystal, landed twenty years in the past, and eventually decided the safest hiding place was inside Hank’s own life.

The switch, detailed in X-Men Unlimited #10 (1996), was methodical horror: Dark Beast lured Hank to the abandoned Brand Corporation building, captured him, sealed him behind a brick wall in titanium restraints with only a meager water supply — kept alive in case his double needed to pry more knowledge out of him — dyed his own fur to match, and simply showed up for work as Beast.

Nobody noticed — telepaths included — because Onslaught shielded the impostor’s mind. The ruse only collapsed when Dark Beast openly joined Onslaught; government-sponsored X-Factor then found the real Hank, starved and restrained, and freed him in X-Factor #125–126 (1996). Hank escaped in time to help fight Onslaught — against the villain who had protected the man wearing his face.

Why It's Obscure

The X-Men’s resident genius was once replaced so completely that his teammates worked beside the impostor for weeks. The double was him — just raised by Apocalypse.

AoA
The double — in the Age of Apocalypse timeline, Hank McCoy was Apocalypse’s pet geneticist, experimenting on prisoners. That Hank crossed to Earth-616 through the M’Kraan Crystal.
The wall
Captured in the abandoned Brand Corporation site, the real Beast was bricked up and restrained in titanium, fed just enough water to stay useful. His double’s filing system: one original, bricked.
The cover
Dark Beast dyed his fur to Hank’s shade and bluffed through questions his narrower knowledge couldn’t answer — while murdering several of Hank’s childhood friends and teachers to protect the secret.
1996
Onslaught had known all along and shielded him from telepaths. When the impostor defected openly, X-Factor freed the real Hank from his cell (X-Factor #125–126).
