EVERY TIME BEAST USED HIS STRENGTH, HE LOST HIS BRAIN!
The Featured Fact

Hank McCoy’s worst power upgrade arrived disguised as a single touch. During X-Factor’s first clash with the Horsemen in X-Factor Vol. 1 #19 (1987), the Horseman Pestilence laid a hand on Beast — a contact normally meant to deliver agony and viral infection — and walked away leaving something stranger behind.

The delayed bill came due in X-Factor #24, when Apocalypse himself spelled out the terms: because the infection had tangled with an earlier serum treatment, every exertion of Hank’s growing strength would now cost him intellect. Punch harder, think slower. The X-Men’s resident genius was suddenly rationing his own heroics, terrified that one more fight might leave nothing of his mind at all.

Week by week the trade hollowed him out until Hank was operating with a child’s understanding — and still intercepting danger meant for his teammates. When the mutant Infectia moved to kiss Iceman, Beast threw himself into her path instead. Her molecular kiss scrambled him between forms before settling the account: his blue fur returned, his full intelligence came back with it, and his strength stayed at its new, higher level.

Why It's Obscure

A power that taxed the one thing Hank valued most — his mind — turned every rescue into arithmetic: how much of himself was this save worth?

X-Factor #19
The touch — Pestilence makes contact during the Horsemen’s debut attack, and the infection takes hold without any immediate symptom dramatic enough to warn him.
X-Factor #24
The terms — Apocalypse taunts Beast with the mechanics of the curse mid-battle, then tricks the weakened hero into wrecking the stabilizers aboard the team's own ship.
The slide
Childlike Hank — as the condition deepened, Beast confided in reporter Trish Tilby without grasping what a journalist does with a confession.
Infectia
The accidental cure — a kiss aimed at Iceman landed on Beast instead, and the molecular chaos it caused restored fur, mind and strength together.
