HE STOLE HAWKEYE'S NAME — AND JOINED THE AVENGERS!
The Featured Fact

In 2009 the Avengers’ archer was a serial killer in a borrowed costume. After Bullseye helped fight off the Skrull invasion, Norman Osborn — the former Green Goblin, now America’s top cop in the Dark Reign era — rewarded him with a seat on his new public Avengers team and a new identity: Hawkeye, costume, codename, bow and all, as launched in Dark Avengers #1 (2009).

It was a publicity costume over an unchanged man. On the Dark Avengers’ first missions “Hawkeye” killed Morgan le Fey (she got better), dropped a piloted Hulkbuster robot onto a street — 36 civilians dead — and then demanded Osborn give him credit for the kills. Sent out to look heroic, he rescued a woman from attackers, murdered the attackers, murdered the woman for calling Osborn his boss, and blew up the news helicopter filming it.

The charade got its own miniseries, Dark Reign: Hawkeye #1–5 (2009), in which Osborn’s H.A.M.M.E.R. forces literally raided a TV studio to bury the helicopter footage. Clint Barton eventually reclaimed his name — but for over a year of publication, Marvel’s most unrepentant murderer was an Avenger, on the posters, in Hawkeye’s purple, and the public in-story loved him.

Why It's Obscure

Everyone knows Bullseye as Daredevil’s nemesis. Far fewer remember the year Norman Osborn rebranded him as a national hero — and he played the part exactly as badly as you’d expect.

Dark Reign
After Secret Invasion, Norman Osborn ran H.A.M.M.E.R. and built the Dark Avengers: villains wearing heroes’ names — Venom as “Spider-Man,” Moonstone as “Ms. Marvel,” Bullseye as “Hawkeye.”
The reward
Marvel’s own database is blunt: “As a reward from Norman Osborn for his role during the Skrull invasion, Bullseye was placed on the Dark Avengers and given the costume and codename of Hawkeye.”
36 dead
Fighting a rogue Hulkbuster, “Hawkeye” killed its pilot; the falling robot killed 36 civilians. Reprimanded, Bullseye’s complaint was that he wasn’t getting credit.
Cover-up
When a news chopper filmed him murdering bystanders, Osborn’s forces stormed the TV studio to seize the footage — the Dark Reign: Hawkeye miniseries (2009) is the cover-up as much as the crime.
