CABLE BUILT A FLOATING ISLAND NATION — THEN FOUGHT THE SILVER SURFER TO KEEP IT FLYING!
The Featured Fact

Cable founded a country. At the peak of his powers — with the techno-organic virus no longer eating the telekinesis he needed to hold it back — Nathan Summers decided to spend his remaining strength fixing the world in one go. In Cable & Deadpool #6–7 (2004), by Fabian Nicieza, he gathered the scattered fragments of his destroyed orbital headquarters Graymalkin from across the globe and telekinetically fused them into a floating island in the South Pacific. He named it Providence, restored his Bodyslide teleport matrix inside it, and threw the gates open: after tours, psychological tests and skills screenings, several thousand of the world's greatest minds — scientists, philosophers, philanthropists, writers — moved in.

Then he issued the ultimatum. Cable teleported onto the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier and gave the governments of the world 48 hours to destroy their weapons — or he would do it for them. The United States answered with jets and 247 missiles. Cable stopped every one of them with a telekinetic shield and funnelled them out of Earth's atmosphere. S.H.I.E.L.D. sent a new Six Pack to reconnoitre Providence; the X-Men came next. Cable's confession to his father Cyclops gives the game away: he knew his power was about to burn out, and part of the point was to unite humanity — even if it united against him.

The climax is the "Burnt Offering" arc, Cable & Deadpool #10–12. Nick Fury asked Reed Richards for help, and Reed sent the Silver Surfer. Their battle vaporised sections of Providence while Cable rebuilt them at the same time, all while he held the island in the sky — and Cable shattered the Surfer's board before the Surfer blasted much of his left side away. Beaten and burning out, Cable had Deadpool lobotomise him with the teleporter to shut down his higher brain functions, lowered Providence safely into the ocean himself, and fell into a coma — while people around the world started calling him "the Savior" and immigration applications poured in.

Why It's Obscure

Everyone knows Cable as a soldier. Almost nobody remembers his brief second career as a head of state — the time his answer to a lifetime of war was to build a utopia in the sky, dare the world to shoot it down, and then arrange his own defeat.

2004
From wreckage to real estate — Providence is built from the remains of Graymalkin, Cable's cloaked orbital station (first seen in the X-Force era), kept aloft by anti-gravity generators. Recycling, on a national scale.
247
The missile count. The U.S. fired two hundred and forty-seven missiles at Providence. Cable stopped all of them telekinetically and sent them out of the atmosphere. Providence's entire foreign policy, demonstrated in one panel.
THE PLAN
He wanted to lose. Cable told Cyclops he knew he was burning out — and that uniting the world, even against a common enemy called Cable, was itself the achievement. The invasion was the diplomacy.
THE BOARD
He broke the unbreakable. Mid-battle, Cable shattered the Silver Surfer's board — while simultaneously rebuilding the island their fight was destroying and keeping it airborne. Three miracles at once, on a nosebleed.
Trivia
The lobotomy was his idea. Cable recruited Deadpool to assemble the one device that could stop him — then, when Deadpool couldn't bring himself to use it on a friend, Cable talked him through it. Even his defeat was a Cable operation.
