After the plane crash that seemingly killed his parents, Scott Summers woke from a year-long coma to find his brother Alex adopted away — and himself placed in the State Home for Foundlings in Omaha, Nebraska. To the outside world it was an orphanage. In the basement, it was Mister Sinister's secret laboratory.
Sinister had been tracking the Summers bloodline for a century. He arranged Scott's placement, had Alex adopted separately to leave Scott emotionally vulnerable, and studied the boy — including during his coma. He even created the ruby-quartz glasses that contain Scott's optic blasts, through trial and error in that lab.
And the bully? Backup stories in Classic X-Men #41–42 (1989) by Chris Claremont show a boy named Nate, Scott's roommate — unhealthily attached, aggressively protective, blocking Scott from other friends. Claremont intended Nate to be Sinister himself in disguise; he left the book before revealing it on-panel, but the reading stuck: the kid tormenting Scott was the villain running the building.
Why It's Obscure
Everybody knows Cyclops's visor. Almost nobody knows his childhood bedroom sat on top of a supervillain's lab — or that his orphanage bully was the villain.
