Today's Fact
Verified against three independent sources. Issues cited below.
In Daredevil #24 (1967), "To Fight the Impossible Fight!" — Spider-Man sends Matt Murdock a note revealing he knows Matt is Daredevil. Before Matt can intercept it, Foggy Nelson and Karen Page read the note. Caught flat-footed, Matt invents an entire person on the spot: "Mike Murdock," his identical twin brother — and claims Mike is the real Daredevil.
And Matt commits to the bit. For two years, he juggles three identities: blind lawyer Matt, Daredevil, and "Mike" — the carefree, wisecracking twin who is everything the stern, studious Matt isn't. Mike shows up, boasts openly that he's Daredevil, and throws everyone off Matt's scent. All played by one very tired blind man.
The triple life finally breaks him in Daredevil #41–42 (1969), so Matt fakes Mike's death — and announces that Mike trained a "new" Daredevil as his successor before dying. The lie works for nearly fifty years, until Daredevil #606 (2018), when the Inhuman Reader's powers accidentally make Mike Murdock a real person.
Why It's Obscure
Daredevil's identity games are famous, but the whole Mike Murdock saga — a fake sibling invented in a panic, played in public for two years, then "killed" — reads like a soap-opera fever dream. It was the weirdest secret-identity dodge of the Silver Age, and almost nobody remembers it happened at all.
