Doctor Doom's most infamous suit of armor is not metal. It is leather — made from the skin of Valeria, his childhood sweetheart, the Romani girl he grew up with and the first person he ever loved. She is also the woman Reed and Sue Richards' daughter is named after: Doom delivered that baby himself and, as his price, named her Valeria for his lost love. Then, in Fantastic Four Vol. 3 #67 (2003) — the opening chapter of "Unthinkable," by Mark Waid & Mike Wieringo — he went and found the original.
Doom had decided science was no longer enough. To master sorcery as completely as he had mastered technology, he made a pact with a trio of demons, the Haazareth Three. Their price was a sacrifice of something irreplaceable. So Doom travelled to Valeria, now living in Georgia, and arrived doing the two things he does for almost no one: without his armor, and without his mask. He brought the wooden music box he had carved for her as a boy, fastened a locket around her neck, renounced his life's work, and professed his love. When she finally accepted him — when she said she still loved him — the spell triggered. The locket burned mystical sigils into her flesh, her skin was stripped from her bones, and the demons reforged it into a new suit of mystical leather armor. Doom put it on.
Wearing her, Doom gained the magical power he would have had if he had spent his life studying sorcery instead of science. He made baby Valeria Richards his familiar, trapped her brother Franklin in Hell, immobilised Doctor Strange, neutralised the Fantastic Four's powers and tortured them — while taunting the powerless Reed, locked in his magical library, that teaching him magic would be like giving a dog a road-map. It took Reed actually learning magic, and tricking Doom into enraging his own demonic patrons, to end it: the Haazareth dragged Doom to Hell in Fantastic Four #500. Doom calls many things unthinkable. The arc's title is the one time Marvel agreed with everyone else.
Why It's Obscure
Everyone knows Doom's steel armor. The obscure horror is the suit he wore for one arc in 2003 — the one he made a demon pact to earn, paid for with the only woman who ever loved him, and then wore into battle against her namesake's family.
