EMMA FROST HAS A THOUSAND CLONED DAUGHTERS SHE NEVER GAVE BIRTH TO
The Featured Fact

Five identical blonde telepaths arrived at the Xavier Institute calling themselves the Stepford Cuckoos — Celeste, Esme, Irma, Phoebe and Sophie — and promptly became Emma Frost's star pupils after their debut in New X-Men #118 (2001). They dressed alike, finished each other's sentences, and shared one hive mind. What none of them knew was why they resembled their teacher so closely.

The answer arrived in X-Men: Phoenix – Warsong #1 (2006). The Cuckoos were grown from ova harvested from Emma herself while she lay comatose in the mansion med-lab. Over a thousand eggs were taken from her ovaries during that coma. John Sublime and the Weapon Plus program raised the clones at a facility called the World and designated the project Weapon XIV — a living weapon engineered to pool its telepathy and wipe out mutantkind.

Only five clones were ever released into the school. The remaining hundreds stayed in incubation chambers underground, while the five on campus carried mental conditioning that stopped anyone from asking where they had come from. The girls had also inherited more than Emma's face: her telepathy and her diamond form came as part of the package. Emma spent years mentoring her own daughters without either side knowing the truth.

Why It's Obscure

Five star pupils who look exactly like their teacher usually reads as a coincidence. For Emma Frost it was a theft — committed while she was unconscious, at industrial scale.

2001
New X-Men #118 — the Cuckoos debut as Emma's protégés, their shared mind already strong enough to rival senior telepaths at the school.
The harvest
Sublime removed more than a thousand oocytes from the comatose Emma — the five famous sisters are a tiny sample of what was taken.
Weapon XIV
Weapon Plus numbered the project between its other living weapons. The design goal was blunt: combine a thousand linked telepaths into a mutant-killing instrument.
The joke
The surname Cuckoo was Sublime's private gag — like the bird, he had slipped his eggs into someone else's nest and let the X-Men raise them.
