Today's Fact

Forge debuted in Uncanny X-Men #184 (1984) as a Defense Department contractor: a Cheyenne mutant whose gift is intuitive invention — he sees what a machine should be and builds it. One of his first government commissions, after a scanner for the Dire Wraiths, was a Neutralizer able to strip a mutant's powers away entirely. Forge warned that the device was untested and dangerous.
Washington took it anyway. Acting on presidential orders in Uncanny X-Men #185 (1984), agent Henry Peter Gyrich carried the Neutralizer into a confrontation meant for Rogue, who was wanted over a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent's death. Forge tried to stop him. The beam missed its intended target — and hit Storm, erasing the weather powers that defined her.
The guilt became personal fast: Forge pulled the powerless, injured Storm from a river, sheltered her at his Dallas home, and fell for her — before she learned whose invention had emptied the sky for her and walked out. His backstory explained the inventor's caution with his own gifts: in Vietnam, after his squad was killed, the shaman-trained Forge summoned spirits to destroy the enemy, then called a B-52 strike on his own position to close the portal — surviving at the cost of his right hand and right leg, which he replaced with cybernetics of his own design.
Why It's Obscure
The X-Men's greatest maker entered the saga holding the one weapon that could unmake them — and his first famous act was failing to keep it out of the wrong hands.
