Cain Marko is not a mutant. He is Charles Xavier's stepbrother — son of Kurt Marko, who married Sharon Xavier and favored Charles while abusing Cain. Serving together in the US Army in Korea, the two stumbled on a hidden temple dedicated to the entity Cyttorak.
On an altar sat a huge ruby — the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak. Cain grabbed it and read the inscription aloud: “Whosoever touches this gem shall be granted the power of the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak! Henceforth, you who read these words, shall become ... forevermore ... a human juggernaut!” The gem channeled Cyttorak's power into him — and the temple caved in, burying him, presumed dead.
It took him years to dig out. When he did, he went straight for Xavier — shrugging off the mansion's defenses in X-Men #12 (1965), his debut, until the Human Torch's flame-pulses hypnotized him long enough for Angel to remove his helmet and leave him open to Xavier's telepathic attack. The power was never mutation: it was a mystical bargain, spoken aloud.
Why It's Obscure
Everybody knows nothing stops the Juggernaut. Almost nobody knows he's not a mutant at all — his power came from reading a warning label out loud.
