Today's Fact

Wilson Fisk has run mobs, bought judges, and served as Mayor of New York. Ask him what he does for a living, though, and the Kingpin of Crime gives the most disarming answer in Marvel Comics: he is, publicly, a humble dealer in spices. The first company Fisk ever owned outright — bought with the illegal gains of his early empire — was a firm dealing in spices imported from the Far East.
It was the perfect front, and Fisk knew it. Spice money was old money: respectable, fragrant, and boring enough that no investigator, journalist, or rival bothered to look twice. While the legitimate business empire grew into property, shipping, and finance, Fisk kept professing the spice line in public — the crimelord's equivalent of a card that reads "Nothing to see here."
The cover even survived exile. When the Maggia and HYDRA squeezed Fisk out of New York, he fled to Japan — and rebuilt his fortune the same way he had built it the first time, through the spice trade, before returning to retake his city. The deadliest man in New York didn't just use spices as a disguise. Twice, they were the ladder he climbed back to the top.
Why It's Obscure
Everybody knows the white suit and the diamond cane. Almost nobody asks what the paperwork says he sells.
