A.I.M. BUILT M.O.D.O.K. A BRIDE — AND HE UNMADE HER WITHIN THE HOUR!
The Featured Fact

M.O.D.O.K. has had exactly one bride, and A.I.M. manufactured her as a weapon against him. In Incredible Hulk Vol. 1 #287–290 (1983), by Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema, a rogue A.I.M. faction that had seized one of his bases fed S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Dr. Katherine “Kate” Waynesboro through the same alteration process that had made him — and she emerged as Ms. M.O.D.O.K., a giant-headed super-genius in a Doomsday Chair of her own, built to be powerful enough to destroy him and programmed to stay loyal to A.I.M.

The loyalty programming failed on sight. Confronted with the original, Ms. M.O.D.O.K. refused her makers’ orders, and M.O.D.O.K. — a creature who had never once been offered an equal — promptly pronounced the recreated Waynesboro his new bride, and she assented. The two merged their mental energies in a bizarre communion of shared intellect while the Hulk, who had loved Kate as Banner’s research assistant and secret S.H.I.E.L.D. minder, watched the strangest courtship in his long and unlikely romantic history.

Then M.O.D.O.K. ruined his own wedding reception in a single gesture. As a demonstration of power for his bride, he casually disintegrated the Abomination — the gamma monster who had delivered Kate to A.I.M. in the first place. Ms. M.O.D.O.K., aghast at the murder, turned on her consort on the spot. The fight ended with her knocked back into the alteration chamber, which reversed the process and returned an unharmed, entirely human Kate Waynesboro — while M.O.D.O.K. brought the laboratory down around them and fled, a bachelor again.

Why It's Obscure

A.I.M. tried to replace him with a loyal copy. The copy took one look at the original, chose him over her creators, then chose her conscience over him.

1983
Incredible Hulk #287 — Kate Waynesboro debuts as Bruce Banner’s laboratory assistant, secretly a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent assigned to monitor the Banner-controlled Hulk.
#290
The alteration chamber — a breakaway A.I.M. faction subjects Kate to the M.O.D.O.K. process specifically to create a counterpart strong enough to kill the original — and, unlike him, obedient.
The bride
Consent of the governed — Ms. M.O.D.O.K. rebels against A.I.M. instantly, sides with M.O.D.O.K., and agrees to be his consort. Two living weapons, one mind-meld, zero wedding planning.
The break
One disintegration too many — M.O.D.O.K. atomises the Abomination as a party trick. His bride, who still has Kate Waynesboro’s conscience under the enormous cranium, is repulsed — and the marriage ends before the hour does.
Aftermath
Back to human — forced into the chamber during the fight, Kate reverts to normal with no lasting harm. M.O.D.O.K., meanwhile, adds “shot his own bride back into humanity” to a romantic résumé nobody else could match.
