Here is the retcon that quietly detonated a century of X-Men history: the original Nathaniel Essex died in the 19th century, consumed by the powers Apocalypse gave him. Before dying, Essex — convinced that machine minds would one day threaten all organic life — made four clones and sent each down a different road to power. None of them knew the others existed. Three believed they were the original. The pods were found by Mystique and Destiny in 1895, each marked with a playing-card suit: diamond, club, heart, and spade (Immortal X-Men #8, 2022).
The diamond is the one you know: Mister Sinister, who spent a century shepherding mutant genetics — the Summers bloodline, the Morlocks, Krakoa's Quiet Council. The club surfaced as Doctor Stasis, an anti-mutant Orchis scientist obsessed with pushing humanity instead — exposed when Cyclops unmasked him and Sinister saw a forehead branded with the wrong suit (Immortal X-Men #4). The spade, Orbis Stellaris, left Earth entirely to deal in alien genetics among the stars.
And the heart broke the pattern completely: it was not a clone of Nathaniel at all, but of his dead wife Rebecca — the mystic trader Mother Righteous, who pursued godhood through magic, dreams, and the Astral Plane instead of science. Four Essexes, four disciplines — genetics, human enhancement, xenogenetics, sorcery — all racing the machines, and, as the Krakoa era revealed, all unknowingly feeding their progress to a fifth Essex: the A.I. called Enigma.
Why It's Obscure
He clones everyone else, so readers assumed the one thing he would never fake was himself. He faked himself first.
