SINISTER'S DEATH HAD A STAND-IN WAITING — A WOMAN WHO WOKE UP WEARING HIS DIAMOND!
The Featured Fact

Nathaniel Essex does not trust resurrection to luck, so he pre-positioned his own. Long before Krakoa’s cloning farms, Sinister prepared a biological fail-safe against his death: a virus carrying his DNA, seeded into selected test subjects and set to trigger if he was ever destroyed. When Sinister was apparently killed during Messiah Complex, the trigger fired inside one of those subjects — an otherwise unknown woman named Claudine Renko — as told in X-Men: Legacy Vol. 1 #214 (2008), by Mike Carey and Scot Eaton.

Claudine did not die, and she was not simply possessed. Her body rewrote itself into a perfect genetic clone of Essex — in female form: pale skin, black hair, and the red diamond blazing on her forehead. She inherited his telepathy and a share of his memories, and took the name Miss Sinister. The imperfection in the plan was the passenger: Claudine’s own mind stayed in the chair. Panel after panel, she describes feeling him swallow her personality a little more each time he surfaces — a backup copy fighting its original for the same skull.

Miss Sinister went to work anyway, surfacing beside Sebastian Shaw, angling for the Hellfire Club’s Black Queen seat, and later trying to manipulate Daken into killing Wolverine — a scheme that ended with Daken stabbing her for using him. She survived, resurfaced against X-23, and kept scheming in her own right rather than as Essex’s puppet. Sinister had engineered the perfect insurance policy, with one clause he never costed in: the policy could read the contract, resent it, and start a career of her own.

Why It's Obscure

Other men write a will. Essex wrote himself into somebody else’s genome, set the document to execute on his death, and then discovered the heir had opinions.

2008
X-Men: Legacy #214 — Claudine Renko debuts as Miss Sinister, created by Mike Carey and Scot Eaton, in the aftermath of Sinister’s apparent death in Messiah Complex.
The trigger
A virus, not a clone tank — Sinister seeded his DNA into living subjects in advance; on his death the virus activated and rebuilt Claudine’s body as his female genetic duplicate, telepathy included.
The diamond
Same brand, new bearer — the red forehead diamond that marks Essex appeared on Claudine’s brow as the transformation completed; she kept his colours, his pallor and his taste for high collars.
The flaw
She stayed herself — unlike a clean overwrite, Claudine retained her own personality and fought his rising influence from inside — an heir who experienced her inheritance as a haunting.
Aftermath
Black Queen ambitions — Miss Sinister allied with Sebastian Shaw, schemed against Daken and X-23, and survived being stabbed by the former: Essex’s contingency plan, running her own agenda.
