Today's Fact
Verified against three independent sources. Issue cited below.
In Captain Britain (vol. 2) #13 (1986), the assassin Slaymaster beats Betsy Braddock — then holding the Captain Britain mantle — and gouges out her eyes. Blind, she retreats to Switzerland, “seeing” only by borrowing the eyes of people around her through her telepathy. Then Mojo and Spiral come collecting.
In New Mutants Annual #2 (1986) — Betsy’s first American comics appearance — Mojo has her rebuilt with bionic eyes, brainwashes her, brands her “Psylocke,” and makes her the star of Wildways, a Mojoverse TV show beamed at Earth’s children to lure them in. Cypher and Warlock free her mind, she helps defeat Spiral — and, unable to bring herself to give up sight again, she keeps the eyes and stays on at Xavier’s school.
Here is the part nobody told the X-Men: the eyes are cameras. Everything Betsy sees is recorded and broadcast back to the Mojoverse as programming — which is how the X-Men became Mojo’s highest-rated show, a fact he is still gloating about in X-Men Annual #10. The codename, the comeback, the career — all of it started as a villain’s product placement, with a live feed attached.
Why It's Obscure
Her codename was a TV brand, her comeback was a kidnapping, and her eyes were a broadcast deal she never signed.
