When Brian Braddock stepped away from the mantle, Betsy took over as Captain Britain, wearing a modified version of Kaptain Briton's costume and working alongside Captain UK. The crime boss Vixen lured her into a trap over kidnapped Warpies, and Vixen's hired assassin Slaymaster — kitted out in an amplifier suit of his own — beat her savagely and gouged out her eyes on his employer's orders, in Captain Britain vol. 2 #13 (1986).
Brian felt his twin's agony through their psychic link, flew in without his costume, and killed Slaymaster on the spot — but the damage was already permanent. R.C.X., the agency that had put Betsy in the costume, offered her cybernetic replacement eyes. She turned them down flat, choosing to find her way through the world on telepathy alone.
Betsy withdrew to a friend's chateau in Switzerland to recover, still blind and still refusing artificial sight. That refusal quietly shaped everything that followed: the eyes she eventually received were never her choice, because they were installed by somebody else, for somebody else's purposes, after a kidnapping she had no way to anticipate.
Why It's Obscure
Everyone remembers the eyes Mojo gave her — almost nobody remembers she had already refused a pair offered by her own side.
