The Featured Fact

In Wolverine vol. 3 #55 (2007), by Jeph Loeb & Simone Bianchi, Wolverine finally did the thing decades of fights had only threatened: he took the Muramasa Blade — a sword forged to nullify healing factors — cut off Sabretooth's arm, and then decapitated him. The clone managed only two words, "Do it," before Logan obliged, and left the body in the snow. Marvel played it completely straight: Creed was dead, and later stories even showed his soul in Hell.

Except it was never Victor Creed at all. The "Sabretooth" Logan killed was a feral clone grown by Romulus, the shadowy manipulator who had been staging the whole Wolverine–Sabretooth feud. The real Creed had been swapped out and held in stasis in an old Weapon X facility, then went into hiding while the world believed him dead — training and preparing the next phase of Romulus's plan.

When the truth surfaced, the real Sabretooth returned with an army of his own clones, ambushed Wolverine, and went on to declare himself the secret "invisible ruler" of East Asia after engineering a war between the Hand and the Yakuza. Logan's most definitive kill of his oldest enemy turned out to be Logan killing a disposable copy — exactly as Romulus had planned.

Why It's Obscure

Everyone remembers Wolverine finally killing Sabretooth. Almost nobody remembers the retcon that made the whole execution meaningless — the victim was a clone, the real Creed was in stasis, and the feud itself was being stage-managed.

2007
Wolverine vol. 3 #50–55, "Evolution" — A feral Sabretooth kills Feral and regresses almost to an animal. Logan borrows the Muramasa Blade from Cyclops, who had been keeping it as a failsafe. Emma Frost looks inside Logan's memories of Creed's atrocities and tells Scott: give him the damn sword.
2007
Wolverine #55 — the beheading — The blade stops the arm reattaching, because it suppresses healing factors. Creed, fighting his programming, whispers "Do it" — and Wolverine decapitates him. Presented at the time as a mercy killing and a final ending.
2010
Hell, literally — Follow-up stories showed the dead Sabretooth's soul in the pit of Hell, underlining that Marvel meant this death to stick. Which makes the clone reveal an even bigger rug-pull.
2012
The clone reveal — Wolverine discovers the Sabretooth he beheaded "wasn't the real deal but just a clone created by Romulus," who kept a collection of Creed clones as a backup plan. The real Creed attacks Logan alongside several of his own copies. Source: Marvel Database, Romulus (Earth-616).

The Invisible King — Freed and furious, the real Creed engineers a Hand–Yakuza war in Japan, then kills the surviving faction heads and declares himself East Asia's new "invisible" ruler. Wolverine crashes his victory party to wish him a sarcastic happy birthday.
