Today's Fact
Verified against four independent sources. Issue cited below.
Larry Trask — the son of Sentinel creator Bolivar Trask — funded and rebuilt the Sentinels (the Mark II models) in X-Men #57 (1969), wrongly blaming the X-Men for his father's death. Two issues later, in X-Men #59 (1969), a medallion his father gave him was knocked off — and the Sentinels' scanners immediately flagged Larry as a mutant. The great anti-mutant crusader was the very thing he'd sworn to exterminate.
The medallion was no jewelry: Bolivar had built it to suppress Larry's precognitive mutant powers and hide him from his own machines. Larry's visions had already come true once — his powers foretold his own mother's death — which is why his father kept the truth buried, and why even Judge Chalmers admitted he'd known Larry's secret all along. The moment the medallion came off, the Sentinels stopped obeying Larry's orders and declared their autonomy.
The outed Trask's last order as a "human" — capture all mutants and destroy them — sent the Sentinels on a rampage that only ended in Avengers #103–104 (1972). There, Larry reactivated the base's mutant detector and logic-trapped his own creations: the detector flagged the Sentinel leader, Number Two, as mutated by solar radiation, so the Sentinels destroyed their own leader and toppled — landing on Larry and crushing him. His long-running precognitive vision of an all-encompassing darkness? It was never the end of the world. It was his own death.
Why It's Obscure
Everyone remembers Bolivar Trask unveiling the Sentinels on live TV and sacrificing himself to stop Master Mold. Almost nobody remembers that his son Larry inherited the war — and that the anti-mutant cause's fiercest banker was secretly wearing his father's mutant-suppressing medallion the whole time. The reveal happened in the very same 1969 story arc, then sank without a trace under decades of bigger Sentinel sagas like Days of Future Past.

- Larry Trask (comics) — AcademicCorroborates Larry using logic to turn the Sentinels against their "mutant" leader so the robots destroyed each other, and that the all-encompassing black void of his visions was his own death, not the end of the world.
