Today's Fact
Verified against three independent sources. Issue cited below.
Sentinels exist to hunt mutants. One of them got adopted. In Sentinel vol. 1 #1 (2003), by Sean McKeever & UDON, Wisconsin teenager Juston Seyfert finds a wrecked Mark VI Sentinel in his father's salvage yard, rebuilds it with junkyard parts, and reprograms it — not as a weapon of genocide, but as the one friend who will never leave him.
Juston is no mutant mastermind — he's a bullied freshman whose mother walked out. He first uses the giant robot to scare his tormentors and fake heroic rescues for popularity, then has to live with the guilt. When he researches what his 'bot' actually is — a mutant-hunting killing machine — he keeps it anyway, and teaches it a new prime directive: never abandon him.
The government noticed. The Commission on Superhuman Activities came for the robot, and Juston ran — using the Sentinel's mutant-detection systems to hunt for his missing mother instead (Sentinel vol. 2, 2005). He later joined Avengers Academy with the Sentinel in tow, and was forced into Avengers Arena's Murderworld — the junkyard robot outliving nearly every 'real' Sentinel program Marvel ever built.
Why It's Obscure
Sentinels are mutant-hunting machines built by governments and madmen. One of the longest-running was rebuilt by a lonely teenager in his dad's junkyard and kept as a best friend — even after he learned what it was built to hunt.
