SPIDER-MAN'S PARENTS WERE SECRET AGENTS MURDERED BY THE RED SKULL — THEN FRAMED AS TRAITORS!
The Featured Fact

For six years, nobody explained why Peter Parker was an orphan. Then Amazing Spider-Man Annual #5 (1968) — “The Parents of Peter Parker!”, by Stan Lee & Larry Lieber — dropped a bombshell: a trunk of Aunt May's papers brands Richard and Mary Parker traitors to the United States. Peter, horrified, follows the trail to Algeria to learn whether his parents were enemy spies.

They were spies — America's. Richard and Mary had infiltrated the Red Skull's spy ring as double agents for U.S. intelligence. When the Skull discovered the deception, he had their plane sabotaged — the crash that orphaned Peter — and fabricated the evidence framing them as traitors as his final revenge. His assassin, Karl Fiers, the Finisher, confesses the truth with his dying breath after Spider-Man turns his own missile back on him.

Peter clears his parents' names with a half-melted ID card recovered from the Skull's burning headquarters — proof his parents died defending their country. The story was so durable Marvel revisited it for the 1990s “Pursuit” arc, where the 'returned' Parkers were exposed as Chameleon-built Life Model Decoys (Amazing Spider-Man #365–388) — the real Richard and Mary stayed exactly where Annual #5 left them: heroes, murdered by the Red Skull.

Why It's Obscure

Peter Parker's parents are usually just the reason he lives with Aunt May. The 1968 annual told their real story: American agents murdered by the Red Skull and framed as traitors — a verdict Peter had to live under for years.
