STORM'S FIRST MEETING WITH PROFESSOR X WAS THE DAY SHE PICKED HIS POCKET IN CAIRO!
The Featured Fact

Long before Ororo Munroe commanded weather over the Serengeti, she was Cairo's most accomplished child pickpocket. Orphaned when a crashing jet brought her parents' home down on them during the Suez Crisis, the young Ororo survived on the streets under the master thief Achmed el-Gibar, whose gang of child thieves prized her quick hands above all others. Working a Cairo crowd one day, she lifted the wallet of a bald American tourist — Charles Xavier.

It was the worst pocket she ever picked. Xavier felt the theft the instant it happened, reached out with his mind, and stopped the fleeing girl with a psychic bolt that knocked her flat. Face to face with her, he sensed what she was: a mutant child rifling strangers to eat. He let her keep the encounter as a warning rather than a punishment, and the two parted — neither yet knowing the other would one day hold their life in their hands. The meeting was first recounted in X-Men #117 (1979).

Years later Xavier tracked the grown Ororo down in Kenya for Giant-Size X-Men #1 (1975), where local tribes worshipped her as a weather goddess, and recruited her for the rescue mission that relaunched the X-Men. The goddess act makes the biography easy to misread; underneath the worship and the regality, the foundation of Storm is a starving kid with fast fingers who once robbed the most powerful telepath on Earth and got caught by his thoughts.

Why It's Obscure

The goddess origin gets retold constantly. The pickpocket apprenticeship that put her in Xavier's path is the chapter summaries rush past.
