VENOM CRAVES BRAINS FOR ONE CHEMICAL — AND CHOCOLATE IS THE LOOPHOLE THAT SAVES EVERYONE!
The Featured Fact

Venom’s famous appetite for brains turns out to be a grocery problem. In Venom: The Hunger #1–4 (1996), by Len Kaminski, the symbiote’s hunger is traced to phenethylamine, a neurotransmitter it needs in quantity — and which human brains happen to hold.

When the craving drives the symbiote feral and it abandons Eddie Brock to hunt alone, the sinister Dr. Thaddeus Paine works out the chemistry and exploits it, draining and tormenting both halves of Venom before Eddie turns the same discovery back on him.

The lasting punchline is almost domestic: chocolate also supplies phenethylamine. Eddie can feed the hunger with candy bars instead of casualties, which is why later stories keep showing the monster with a sweet tooth.

Why It's Obscure

A four-issue horror arc whose monster problem is solved, in part, by reading the ingredients label.

1996
The Hunger. Kaminski’s arc treats the brain-eating not as a catchphrase but as a deficiency with symptoms, a diagnosis, and a very interested doctor. Venom, but make it metabolic.
THE CHEMICAL
Phenethylamine. One compound explains the cravings, the feral spiral, and Paine’s leverage over the symbiote all at once. The scariest thing in the book is biochemistry.
THE LOOPHOLE
Chocolate. The substitute supply lets Eddie manage an alien appetite without a body count. Heroism, available in the candy aisle.
