WOLVERINE REJECTED NEW ADAMANTIUM — AND DEVOLVED INTO A NOSELESS FERAL BEAST!
The Featured Fact

In 1996, Wolverine lost his nose — and most of his humanity with it. After Magneto stripped his adamantium in X-Men #25 (1993), Xavier theorized the metal had been holding Logan’s mutation in check: without it, his body kept mutating toward a more primitive, bestial state. In Wolverine Vol. 2 #100 (1996), by Larry Hama and Adam Kubert, Cable’s son Genesis kidnapped Logan and tried to re-bond adamantium taken from Cyber’s corpse, to make him a Horseman-style soldier and leader of the Dark Riders.

Logan’s body violently expelled the new adamantium — the blast killed Dark Riders Hurricane and Lifeforce — and the rejection kicked his devolution into overdrive. Cannonball watched in horror as Wolverine emerged feral and semi-sentient, then slaughtered most of the remaining Dark Riders on his rampage out. Uncanny X-Men #332 spelled out the logic: to reject the metal, Logan had to fully succumb to the animal inside him.

For the following months Logan wore the infamous look: no nose, red eyes, heavier hair and build, a blue bandana, communicating in growls while Elektra and Stick worked to pull his mind back. It remains his most controversial redesign ever — Marvel quietly walked it back within the year, with no in-story cure, and his nose simply returned as his humanity reasserted itself.

Why It's Obscure

Take away the adamantium and the man went with it — the feral, noseless Wolverine is the part of the nineties nobody believes until they see it.

1993
The trigger. Magneto rips out the adamantium in X-Men #25; Xavier concludes the metal had been suppressing an ongoing mutation for decades. The upgrade was also the cage.
1996
Wolverine Vol. 2 #100 — Genesis (Tyler Dayspring) tries to re-bond Cyber’s adamantium; Logan expels it in an explosion and devolves on the spot. Cannonball’s face says what readers were thinking.
NO NOSE
The look. Noseless, red-eyed, bandana-wearing feral Logan stalked the books for months in 1996. Few redesigns in X-Men history are remembered this vividly — or this unkindly.
THE WALK-BACK
No cure, just vibes. His humanity — and nose — gradually returned with no explicit in-story explanation, and by Operation: Zero Tolerance he was essentially himself again. Continuity smelled what it had done.
