The charged cards are only half the act. Since his very first appearance in Uncanny X-Men #266 (1990), Remy LeBeau has carried a second, quieter mutation: a subliminal psionic talent channeled through his voice - the famous hypnotic charm. As Gambit talks, people find themselves agreeing with him, trusting him, and liking him, without quite knowing why.
He used it in that debut story, swaying Lian and the Hounds of the Shadow King - it worked on the servants and failed only against the Shadow King himself, a telepath who trades blows with Xavier. The power has rules: it is subtle influence, not mind control, stronger minds can resist it, and the moment someone realizes he is using it, it stops working. A con that evaporates when spotted.
The same low-level psionics make Gambit's mind slippery for telepaths - even Charles Xavier has struggled to get a clean read on him. Writers have mostly left the charm dormant for decades, which is exactly why it qualifies as obscure: the smoothest talker on the X-Men is not just smooth. Part of it is a mutant power he almost never admits to using.
Why It's Obscure
Everybody assumes the charm is just Cajun charisma and a good coat. The comics have said otherwise since 1990 - the charisma is a weapon, with an off switch built in.
