GAMBIT GROWS OLD AS THE WITNESS - LAST MAN WHO SAW THE X-MEN ALIVE
The Featured Fact

In Bishop's ruined future, one ancient mutant is a living legend: the Witness, said to be the last person to see the X-Men alive before a traitor from within destroyed them. He raised the orphaned Bishop and Shard for a time. His name? LeBeau.

In Uncanny X-Men #287 (1992), Bishop visits the Witness before travelling to the past — and the old man pointedly refuses to name the traitor. In X-Men Vol 2 #8, Bishop meets young Gambit in the present, recognises him as the Witness, and — fresh from Jean Grey's garbled 'traitor tape' — concludes Gambit himself must be the X-traitor.

He was wrong about the traitor — that was Xavier, as Onslaught — but the identification was never undone: the Witness looks like Gambit, talks like Gambit, is named LeBeau, and Gambit himself has since had encounters with his own seeming future self. Marvel has kept it officially suggestive rather than definitive, which only makes the old man in the future more Gambit-like: even his ending is a card he won't show.

Why It's Obscure

Everybody knows the traitor hunt that hung over Gambit for years. Almost nobody follows it to the end of the timeline — where the last man who saw the X-Men alive is an old Witness who answers to the name LeBeau.

287
Uncanny X-Men #287 (1992) — first appearance of the Witness; Bishop confronts him about the X-Men's deaths and gets no name for the traitor.
The name
The Witness is known as LeBeau — Gambit's surname — and he sheltered the young Bishop and Shard in their camp years.
X-Men #8
Bishop recognises present-day Gambit as the Witness on sight — the recognition that fuelled years of X-traitor suspicion against Remy.
The twist
The actual traitor was Professor X / Onslaught. Gambit's crime in that future was simply surviving everyone else.
